Big Catch Sculpture

Des Moines, Washington

Marine View Dr S @ S 218th St

By the time I came across Big Catch, I was already a fan of sculptor Richard Beyer, whose work includes Seattle's People Waiting for the Interurban sculpture and other sculptures I've come across in Seattle and around Washington State. Still, Big Catch takes things up a notch.

The sculpture captures the Legend of the "Big Catch". A wicked witch in love with a handsome fisherman turned her beautiful young rival for his affections into a fish. The fisherman spent years searching Puget Sound for his maiden fair. One day, when fishing at the Des Moines fishing pier he discovered that he had captured a big fish in his net. He immediately recognized it as his long lost love. He pulled her up and kissed her, and with that she turned back into the young maiden.

It's a legend to keep in mind the next time after a bad breakup when someone tells you that that "there are plenty of fish in the sea".
