Pack Forest Model Forest Trail

Eatonville, Washington

9010 453rd St @ Hwy 7, at entrance station

The Charles L. Pack Experimental Forest encompasses over 4,000 acres of working forest and serves as a lab for the University of Washington's School of Encironmental and Forest Services. Pack Forest is also home to the Center for Sustainable Forestry at Pack Forest.

The forest has hiking trails that are open to vistors. Probably the most unique of these trails is the Model Forest Trail. Shortly after Pack Forest was established, a model of the area was created near the entrance station, sort of a relief map except this one used actual earth and rocks, with markers identify roads and rivers.

It hasn't been well-maintained. In fact, if you didn't know what you were looking for you might overlook it unless you spotted one of the markers or small "bridges" where fading roadways crossed fading creeks. But it is worth a quick stop before the real forest finishes overtaking the model forest.
