Mima Mounds Natural Area Preserve

Littlerock, Washington

Waddell Creek Rd

Mima Mounds Natural Area Preserve protects an area of mima mounds, small, domelike earthen mounds many a few meters wide and a couple meters tall, although there can be a lot of variation in size. Trails lead visitors through the mounds.

The origin of the mounds is unknown. One theory suggests that they were created by pocket gophers, a second suggests that they originated as accumlations of wind-blown sediments captured around clumps of vegetation, and a third suggests that they are the result of earthquake activity.
