Monticello Convention Marker
18th Ave @ Maple St
In 1852, a group of settlers in Monticello - now Longview - Washington gathered to petition Congress to split Oregon Territory in half, with the northern half to become the state of Columbia. Congress agreed to the split, but chose the name Washington instead of Columbia in order to avoid confusion with the District of Columbia (the city in which of course is also named Washington - I can see how that avoided confusion).
A marker in Longview provides an overview of the convention and identifies those who signed it.
