North Cascades Highway
Okanogan National Forest
Hwy 20 west of town
Washington Highway 20 crosses the northern part of the state through the North Cascades National Park Complex and the Okanogan National Forest. Heading west out of Mazama, Washington, drivers find increasingly rugged mountain scenery as the road passes through Washington Pass and Rainy Pass on its way towards the national park boundary.
There are a number of places along the way to stop to take in the sights or to take a hike into the wilderness. One especially popular stop is the Washington Pass Overlook, where a short hike leads to the top of a cliff that offers views of Liberty Bell Mountain and the Early Winters Spires.
There are no services between Mazama and Newhalem to the west. The highway is routinely closed in the winter due to deep snow and avalanche dangers.
