Most people associate giant sequoia trees with California. However, a number have been successfully grown in Washington State, including one in the heart of downtown Seattle. Moved to its current location from Aurora Avenue North in 1973, the 100-foot-tall tree is lighted up at Christmas every year.
The urban environment is not all that good for the tree. Because of declining health, the Seattle DOT has taken measures in recent years to try to save the tree.
