Red Mill Totem House

Seattle, Washington

3058 NW 54th St

Red Mill Burgers is a classic burger joint, worth a visit for its menu alone.

But its Ballard neighborhood operation is located in a building designed like a classic totem house, featuring a frontal and two watchmen totem poles in Pacific Northwest Native American styles. The Totem House was originally built in the late 1930s and once housed the Northwesters' Arts and Crafts Shop.

The frontal pole is in Haida style, and was probably carved by Zacherias Nicholas or by J. Houston and Leonard Porter using a Nicholas-carved model.

The two watchmen figures were carved in the Nuu-chah-nulth style, likely by carver Jimmy John of Vancouver Island.
