University Of Washington
Heart of the UW Campus; one block E of 15th Ave NE @ NE Campus Pkwy
College campuses are often interesting places to explore, and the University of Washington's campus and adjacent U-District shopping area is no exception.
At the heart of the campus is a large plaza, Central Plaza, that has been given the nickname Red Square. Given Seattle's liberal politics, some might think that the name is tied to Moscow's Red Square. But the name dates back to 1969 when a parking garage was built under the field there, and the grass was replaced with red brick as part of a plan to prevent rainwater from leaking into the garage.
I don't know that I'd make a special trip to see it. But if you hear about Red Square in Seattle, well, this is it.
(NOTE: The brick is slippery when wet, not a good feature for a plaza in rainy Seattle.)
