Prospector Sculpture

Sumas, Washington

Cherry St @ 1st St

There's a large wooden sculpture of a gold prospector along the highway through Sumas just a couple blocks from the Canadian border crossing.

Although I haven't yet come across an explanation behind it, I suspect that it may be a tribute to John Post, a successful mining prospector who moved to Sumas in 1890. Post discovered and helped to develop the nearby Mt. Baker District gold mines. Ultimately the Post-Lambert group of mines consisted of five claims, each of which produced gold ore.
