Tacoma Art Museum
1701 Pacific Ave
Tacoma Art Museum is a mid-sized art museum that especially focuses on Pacific Northwest regional and Western artists. There are more than 3,000 pieces in its collection.
Featured artists include Guy Anderson, Dale Chihuly, Jacob Lawrence, and others. Untitled-Stone Wave, by Richard Rhodes, fills a small courtyard that the building surrounds. Scott Fife's sculpture Leroy, the Big Pup dominates the lobby and is a personal favorite. The Western art collection features almost 300 works donated by the Haub family and includes pieces that date as far back as 1790.
I was a bit surprised that there was little art on display that represented northwest Native American tribes and culture. Probably because I'm used to coming across such works fairly routinely in my travels around the Pacific Northwest.
